| Since 2000, the
Special Olympics
Westmoreland County Cycling Program
has conducted cycling training for persons with intellectual disabilities. Cyclists train two hours per day, two days per week, from May thru August, averaging more than 500 hours per season. All equipment is provided free of charge to the athletes and volunteers including the use of bicycles, helmets and water bottles. Bicycles used include standard mountain bikes, adult three-wheel bikes and bikes with adult stabilizers for better balance. The program opened a 660 square foot training facility near Youngwood in 2006. For more information, email: Chris Riddell, Cycling Co-Director Special Olympics Westmoreland County Cycling Program |

The walk is dedicated to the memory of Brian Downey, Special Olympian. Brian participated in Special Olympics for more than 29 years, in all of the sports that have been offered over the years. He excelled at the local level as well as the regional and state levels. One of his proudest moments was winning a gold and silver medal at the 1985 International Winter Games. However, Brian was more than an athlete. Always with a smile and a friendly hand shake or a hand to the shoulder, Brian would make anyone feel welcome and comfortable. He used these assets for many years serving as a Global Messenger, telling the story about the Special Olympics community, talking about athletes, coaches and volunteers alike. Brian was an inspiration to everyone. When others said "You won't be able to", Brian would smile and simply say, Yes I can." When he didn't compete in a sport, he would be there supporting the other athletes. He worked at all fund raising events, community service projects and helped to build the cycling training facility. His love the last seven years was riding his adult three-wheel bike, #19. He achieved his goal of riding the bike for ten miles during one training session. When he reached the six mile mark in 2004, when congratulated, he said, "I want ten". And he had the determination and heart to achieve that goal. His #19 will be retired when cycling starts in 2007. The bike will be used again, as Brian would have wanted. However, #19 will be looking over the athletes who walk thru the doors of the cycling training facility and silently giving them that boost that Brian was famous for. Help us honor Brian by walking with us this year. |
