Track and Field              May 21, 2005

Accompanied by family and friends, more than 325 athletes got together for a day of competition and fun at the annual Track and Field Meet at Latrobe Stadium.  Representing more than 20 schools and organizations and assisted by more than 400 volunteers, the athletes each competed in three events vying for the medals and ribbons they work so hard to earn. Sara Fenton shows off her well deserved medal.

Opening Ceremonies
The event opened up with the Law Enforcement Torch Run, sponsored by the Latrobe Police Department and Westmoreland FOP.  Torch Run Coordinator Sergeant Santo Columbo led the runners into the stadium carrying with them the Special Olympics Torch.  The Torch Run is held nationally by local programs to raise funds for and awareness of Special Olympics.
Competitions

On a weather perfect day, the athletes competed in races of 50, 100, 200, and 400 meters, softball throw, running and standing long jump, high jump, shot put, wheel chair races and the pentathlon.  More than 1,000 medals and ribbons were presented to athletes to recognize their hard work during training and for their competitive spirit.
