Track and Field May 21, 2005 |

| Accompanied by family and friends, more than 325 athletes got together for a day of competition and fun at the annual Track and Field Meet at Latrobe Stadium. Representing more than 20 schools and organizations and assisted by more than 400 volunteers, the athletes each competed in three events vying for the medals and ribbons they work so hard to earn. |

| Opening Ceremonies | |
| The event opened up with the Law Enforcement Torch Run, sponsored by the Latrobe Police Department and Westmoreland FOP. Torch Run Coordinator Sergeant Santo Columbo led the runners into the stadium carrying with them the Special Olympics Torch. The Torch Run is held nationally by local programs to raise funds for and awareness of Special Olympics. | |
| Competitions | |
| On a weather perfect day, the athletes competed in races of 50, 100, 200, and 400 meters, softball throw, running and standing long jump, high jump, shot put, wheel chair races and the pentathlon. More than 1,000 medals and ribbons were presented to athletes to recognize their hard work during training and for their competitive spirit. | |

| Olympic Village | |

There was also time for fun and
unity. When they weren't in competition, the athletes
were invited to participate in the Olympic Village, a venue of games and
healthy living screening, staffed by volunteers and organizations from
across Westmoreland County. For the third year, the Westmoreland
County Community College Dental Hygiene Program provided dental exams and
screenings to all athletes. Participating organizations included:
