Volunteers |
|
|
Cycling Program volunteers serve as athlete escorts during training sessions. The rides are relaxed and range from five to ten miles per session. The ability to ride long distances is not required and we provide all of the necessary equipment including a bicycle to use. Each volunteer also receives a helmet and water bottle to keep. We do require that all volunteers, like our athletes, wear their helmet when riding. Family members and friends of the athletes are encouraged
to volunteer to share in the experience. |

As a tax-exempt, nonprofit organization, the Special Olympics Westmoreland County Cycling Program relies on donations to provide cycling training and competitions free of charge to athletes and their families. We provide all of the necessary equipment including bicycles and helmets to all participants so that anyone can enjoy the sport of cycling without the worry of cost. In addition to the bicycles and helmets, your donation helps to pay for equipment maintenance and insurance, uniforms and operating supplies.
If you agree that cycling is a great sport for all to enjoy, help us make
this possible by making a tax deductible donation today. Simply
complete the
Cycling
Program Donor Form and mail it to the address listed.

| Another way to donate is to join us at the annual Lake Side 5k Walk. Proceeds from the walk, held at Twin Lakes Park near Greensburg, benefit our cycling program as well as the Greensburg Y.M.C.A. Aquatics Program, which many of our cycling athletes also participate in. For more information on this important event, go to the Lake Side 5k Walk page. Back to Top | |

The Cycling Team feels that since we are supported by our community, that
we should give back. While we can't do it financially, we can, as a
group, provide service hours to help other organizations. In the
past, we have helped at the Westmoreland County Food Bank, participated in
the March For Parks for the Westmoreland County Parks Advisory Group and
assisted with the Five Star Trail Poker Ride. We have also participated in the national Make A Difference Day, sponsored by USA Today, by cleaning up the entire length of the Five Star Trail. Take a look at our Activities Page to see some photos are to read about our various community service projects accomplished as TEAM Special Olympics. Back to Top |

Area Trails |
|
|
Our area is fortunate to have many bicycle and walking
trails that enable cyclists to enjoy safe riding on flat, well-maintained
surfaces through some of the most beautiful scenery found anywhere.
Pennsylvania ranks first in the United States for the number of miles of
bicycle and walking trails converted from former railroad lines. Most if not all of the trails in our
area are supported by a vast volunteer network of Pennsylvania residents
who feel that cycling is an important but in-expensive way for all of us
to maintain a healthy lifestyle. |
