Thanks to the Plumbers and Pipefitters Union 354 in Youngwood, Westy's idea is going to become a reality.  The union membership unanimously voted to allow Special Olympics Westmoreland County Cycling to build a cycling facility on their property, located adjacent to the Five Star Trail.

The building, measuring 30 feet wide and 22 feet deep, will be constructed of concrete block to minimize future maintenance costs.  At this size, we should be able to eventually store more than 75 bicycles and all of our equipment.  Ground breaking was done in October 2004.

Coming in Spring 2006, a photo of our completed building.
Until then, check out our
construction photos.

Our cycling program began in 2000 with five mountain bicycles, six athletes and twelve volunteers.  Today we have more than 27 mountain bicycles, four with adult training wheels as well as seven adult three-wheel bicycles, all crammed into a small storage unit near Lynch Field.  Our athletes, along with their bikes, must cross the railroad tracks to get to the trail.  Additional equipment is stored at volunteers homes and must be transported to each training session.  Training sessions are held two hours a day, two days a week, from May until August.

With our new facility, we will be able to store all of the equipment together, and have easy access to the Five Star Trail.  More importantly, we will have the room to grow the program with the purchase of additional bicycles.  We will also have room to use our stationery trainers, enabling us to conduct sessions even when it is raining.

Since we are an all-volunteer organization with a very small budget, we are asking the community to help us build our facility.  Our organization is supported financially entirely by private donations and community foundations and we do not receive government funding or funding from a parent organization.  Your donations will provide the funding needed for building maintenance and insurance.
